Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology (H.I.E.T) was established in Chennai in 1966 in response to the need for non-formal technical education. Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology is run by the Hindustan Engineering Training centre (HETC) Educational society and registered as a Technical Education Society under the Societies Act, XXI Of 1860. The institution is approved by the Director General of Civil Aviation, Government of India, for conducting Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course and by All India Counsel for Technical Education and the Government of Tamil Nadu for conducting Diploma courses in Automobile, Computer and Mechanical Engineering courses.

Training for the AME Course at HIET has been approved by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The AME License Examination is conducted by the DGCA, Govt of India. The duration of training at the institute is 2 1/2 years, over five semesters and followed by one semester (six months) of post Institutional Apprenticeship in a DGCA approved flying club, airlines or aircraft operator. Facilities are also available at Orient Flight School (O.F.S), a sister concern of H.I.E.T to undergo practical and post institutional training and apprenticeship up to Turboprop aircrafts.
